Blue-throated Hummingbird
|

The new blue-and-green throated hummingbird species has been discovered in a cloud forest in Colombia, and already needs protection from human encroachment, according to the experts who found the bird.
Called the gorgeted puffleg, the new species is easily twice as big as the thumb-sized hummingbirds found in the eastern United States, measuring between 3.5 and 4 inches (95 and 100 mm) in length.
The name comes from the iridescent emerald green and electric blue patch on the throat -- the gorge -- on males, and from tufts of white feathers at the top of the legs, a characteristic of so-called puffleg hummers.Labels: Animals and Insects |

The Truth Behind the "Blue Moon"
|
The phrase "Once in a blue Moon" was first noted in 1824 and refers to occurrences that are uncommon, though not truly rare. Yet, to have two full Moons in the same month is not as uncommon as one might think. In fact, it occurs, on average, about every 32 months. And in the year 1999, it occurred twice in a span of just three months!
For the longest time no one seemed to have a clue as to where the "Blue Moon Rule" originated. It was not until the year 1999 that the origin of the calendrical term "Blue Moon" was at long last discovered. It was during the time frame from 1932 through 1957 that the Maine Farmers' Almanac suggested that if one of the four seasons (winter, spring, summer or fall) contained four full Moons instead of the usual three, that the third full Moon should be called a "Blue

Blue Lobster
|
Blue lobsters are members of the phylum Arthropoda which, in Greek means “jointed leg”, and are related to shrimp, crabs, and barnacles. The blue lobster is very rare and is a mutant of the familiar brown lobster. Like all lobsters, blue lobsters have a hard outer skeleton (exoskeleton) made of a substance called chiton. Lobsters must shed their shell periodically in order to grow. This process is called molting. Blue lobsters tend to be more aggressive because their coloring attracts predators, which may be why so few survive in the wild.
One in a million of lobsters are blue. Of course, when a blue lobster is cooked, it ends up looking just like any of its brethren, a baked orange color. A research study conducted at the University of Connecticut, discovered that a genetic defect causes a blue lobster to produce an excessive amount of protein. The protein, and a red caratenoid molecule known as astaxanthin, push together to form a blue complex known as crustacyanin, giving the lobster its unique blue color. One reason that lobsters are so expensive, is that they do not reach marketable size quickly. It takes a lobster five to eight years to weigh a pound. To swim, lobsters propel themselves backwards, by flips of their tail. Lobsters breathe by means of gills located in cavities on either side of their body. Water is directed over the surface of these gills by small appendages on either side of the mouth.

A photography of mine taken on board the Cebu Pacific plane to Manila. It was less than an hour trip from Cebu City and managed to snapped my camera for this enticing formation of cotton like clouds.

Blue Scorpion on Stick
|
Chinese people eat anything and everything from insects to bird's nests. They are nearly true as there were many travelers have experienced eating some of thier weird and exotic foods. The relatively tame dishes include crunchy fried caterpillar and snake, baked cockroaches, cow stomach, bird embryos, blue scorpion...etc.
At Wang Fu Jin, shopping was a little expensive. The main reason to go there was the night market with snack stands. They have every kind of possible food there. The most interesting is the blue scorpion on stick, starfish, frog on stick and crickets.Take a stop on the stalls there and experience a once in a lifetime taste of these foods.
