Blue Man
|
Paul Karason aka Blue Man. This is not a make-up but a real purple blue color skin.He is a 57 years old man who was born with a normal skin at childhood. He became what he has now because of drinking a substance that is said to contained silver.
He started drinking this substance 14 years back because he believed that this has the capacity to cure some problems of the body. Though, his skin has turned into blue but he had no intension to stopped drinking on it.
For now, he is not seeking for any medical treatment but rather a community that is willing to accept on what he is now.Labels: People |

Blue Jean Dye
|
The common dye found in blue jeans and ballpoint pens is called phthalocyanine and is a light-activated, or photosensitive, agent with cell-destroying properties.
This has been known for at least 15 years but, until now, scientists have not been able to successfully deliver it into cells; hence there's no harm in wearing blue jeans.
The University of East Anglia (UEA) team used the gold particles as "trojan horses". Their small size enables them to easily enter cells, and the phthalocyanine is taken up along with them.
When pulsed with laser light, the compound produces a highly reactive form of oxygen which causes the cancer cells to commit suicide.
UEA's Dr David Russell explained: "Because this compound does not dissolve in water, it is difficult to get it into cells. But this 'fat soluble' property is precisely what makes it a great potential therapy.
"We have shown using nanotechnology that we can get phthalocyanine into the cancer cells where it binds and, on activation, causes substantial cell death," he told the British Association's Science Festival.Labels: Science |

Blue-throated Hummingbird
|
The new blue-and-green throated hummingbird species has been discovered in a cloud forest in Colombia, and already needs protection from human encroachment, according to the experts who found the bird.
Called the gorgeted puffleg, the new species is easily twice as big as the thumb-sized hummingbirds found in the eastern United States, measuring between 3.5 and 4 inches (95 and 100 mm) in length.
The name comes from the iridescent emerald green and electric blue patch on the throat -- the gorge -- on males, and from tufts of white feathers at the top of the legs, a characteristic of so-called puffleg hummers.Labels: Animals and Insects |

The Truth Behind the "Blue Moon"
|
The phrase "Once in a blue Moon" was first noted in 1824 and refers to occurrences that are uncommon, though not truly rare. Yet, to have two full Moons in the same month is not as uncommon as one might think. In fact, it occurs, on average, about every 32 months. And in the year 1999, it occurred twice in a span of just three months!
For the longest time no one seemed to have a clue as to where the "Blue Moon Rule" originated. It was not until the year 1999 that the origin of the calendrical term "Blue Moon" was at long last discovered. It was during the time frame from 1932 through 1957 that the Maine Farmers' Almanac suggested that if one of the four seasons (winter, spring, summer or fall) contained four full Moons instead of the usual three, that the third full Moon should be called a "Blue
